The General Congregation of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary took place in Lima Peru at San Jose de Cluny Retreat House from September 2-26, 2006. Fifty-six delegates gathered in Lima along with representatives from the Congregation of Jesus, our Mary Ward companions. The delegates were strengthened by the prayers and support of members of the Institute and colleagues and friends around the world.

Electing a New Leadership Team

In an atmosphere of prayer and blessing, confidence and joy, the delegates elected Marian Moriarty as General Superior for the next eight years. Sandra Perrett (Vicar) along with Carmen Diston, Barbara Murphy and Beatrice Stuart were elected to the General Council. Before the opening of the Congregation delegates had opportunities to visit IBVM ministries among the poorest who live in and around the city of Lima.

The Way Forward

In response to the question “Where is the Spirit Calling us today?” the General Congregation discerned three calls for the Institute in setting a path for the future.

Where is the Spirit Calling us Today?

Calls to Action 2006

  • Our Institute is called to a deeper place to listen to the passion of God and wrestle with the meaning of religious life today.
  • Our Institute is called to more relevant expressions of Communion which reflect a relational God generous in gift, equality, diversity and outreach.
  • Our Institute is called to sharpen its engagement with the Church and the world.
